Born Landen, Belgium in 1994. Raised in a creative and entrepreneurial family, his parents are architects and grandfather was a painter. Starts working in construction from the age of 12. “I still remember the feeling of moving 2000kg of concrete blocks, only to move it again differently some moments later.” Soon Nickx is doing brick and mortar, demolition, carpentry, interior finishing, etc. for his parents company. Growing up in a small town was hard, standing out from the crowd is frowned upon by local mentality. Got his first DSLR at 14, this opened the door to Nickx becoming a visual researcher, he started by examining and dissecting mushrooms in his backyard to finding unusual architectural patterns in cities. With his parents and brother Nickx travelled to many parts of the world. The manner of traveling, exploring serendipitously, carries on in his character and art. “We were seeing mirages in the dessert, scuba diving the Maldives, dog sledding in Lapland and playing Pokemon in between. I had my 12th birthday in Las Vegas and thought the fireworks were for me.” Early on Nickx knew stories are the highest good. “Rome was a revelation as I got interested in the concept of ‘Uomo universale’ better known as generalist. There I first realized that man is capable of anything at the same time.” When he lost his camera on a train in Japan a couple years later, Nickx became interested in ‘different’ forms of photography by looking for a new camera on the internet. “The internet opened up to me late, but when it did I was searching all the corners of it for information on history of photography, music, philosophy, politics, health, etc. This way I had information others didn’t know or want to know…” Sports had a huge role in Nickx adolescence, he was a goalkeeper, tennis player, athletics and eventually played in the Belgian national basketball league for 3 years. “I had a poster of Dennis Rodman in my bedroom and saw Rihanna perform at Madison Square garden before we knew who she was.” Nickx didn't own a smartphone until the age of 19, which he calls beneficial for his individuality. “thought generating dies looking at their palm” Nickx never participated in social media as he saw people around him change drastically, which he finds similar to bird behavior. The day after getting his car license Nickx went on a solo trip to Paris. “I just turned 18, the people driving around the Arc de Triomphe formed a DONDA like performance of hell, it was savage. I believe the gas powered car is a gift” There he first immersed himself completely in culture, walking 25 km a day visiting anything. At 18 he starts an Industrial design program only to drop out 2 years later to start his own business in 2013. Starts doing graphic, branding, website design locally. In his spare time he works on multiple art projects ranging from literature to sculpture. Nickx suddenly developed tinnitus in 2015 which led to him questioning the nature of sound, this ultimately culminated in seeing sound as a mantra through Transcendental Meditation thanks to David Lynch. In 2016 Nickx does has his first exposition at Collectible Brussels under the name ‘.mode’. The same year the project wins the Elle Decoration Uptown Design Award. 2017 became a year of change after traveling to China to learn basic Mandarin Chinese. The experience of daily life in China pre-Covid changed his perspective on social and political life.
